Brother David has been working hard, amidst numerous other projects as well, to organize, design, plant and cultivate the large greenhouse on our property near the Rio Chama.

Brother David’s endeavors include protecting the necessary plants from invading squirrels, with cleverly constructed protective covers over the beds for the varieties of lettuce, tomatoes, numerous herbs, zucchini and collard greens. Fortunately, the squash, shown in today’s photo, as well as pumpkin and eggplant, are not in need of the added protection.

Brother also has planted a large field outside the greenhouse, for potatoes, onions and corn. A high fence has been added to keep the deer from reaching the outdoor garden.

The abundant harvest we anticipate from the greenhouse and field has already begun and will extend well into the Fall.

Hats off to Brother David and the Monastery guests who have assisted him in this welcome project for healthy meals for the monks and guests alike.
