Easily overlooked and rarely mentioned, is our school of koi, lovely golden and silver fish, who inhabit our cloister pond.

Numbering around forty, the koi quietly pass their days swimming, eating and minding their own business, day by day, year by year, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall.

A monk is assigned to provide fish food once a day to the koi and of course they get plenty of water.

As the Book of Daniel says, “Bless the Lord, you whales and all creatures in the water” (chapter 3, verse 57).

It is already October, and we see the cottonwood trees slowly turning shining gold, a beautiful sight to behold.

With our prayers and greetings,

Abbot Christian and the monks
