Sunrise in the Chama Canyon where we live is always tranquil and sometimes dramatic. Sunset, on the other hand, is often on the tempestuous side.

The recent sunrise pictured today finds a bird perched on the cross atop our church belltower.

Writing fifty-three years ago, the monk Thomas Merton used these words about our monastery church:

“The tower is like a watchman looking for something or someone of whom it does not speak.”

That is an apt description for the present as well, and the bird on the cross a participant in the silent witness of our desert monastic existence.

We meet for some hours each day in church, and pray for the needs and intentions of all those near and far and dear to our hearts.
