How do monks get their toothpaste when they run out?
Each week, usually on Tuesday, two of our brothers go to the town of Espanola, about an hour and a half from us, and from time to time as far as Santa Fe, about two hours away, for necessary supplies, most especially food. The two shoppers also purchase needed toiletries and various and sundry items for our use.
When the shoppers return, food is put in the kitchen pantries and refrigerators. The toiletries are placed in a special supply closet, which Brother Andre opens each Monday, Wednesday and Friday after the Office of None (the Ninth Hour), where the brothers can get toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, Kleenex, batteries, etc. There are never too many seeking such items at a time, so the shop is usually open for just a few minutes at a time.
