This icon is one of the most famous and earliest depictions of the Holy Family, painted before any Italian painter ever began. As shown in the icon, both Mary and Joseph are holding the Christ Child who is sitting regally as the King that he is. His one hand is holding his Mother’s hand and his other is blessing her because she has been given the role of Theotokos, Bearer of God, Bearer of Jesus. The halos symbolize holiness and the stars on the shoulder and forehead symbolize Mary’s perpetual virginity. The inscription letters are Greek and identify Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This is a wonderful icon to have because it reminds all who see it of the vital importance of families in our world.
