Guests on retreat here are often amazed at the temperature fluctuations between day and night time in our high desert setting. At this time of year, daytime temperatures can climb to the mid-90s, and by morning, down to the high 50s. Thankfully, humidity is very low here, so we are not inconvenienced by that climatic feature of many parts of the world, especially in the Summer months.

Today’s photograph was taken on Saturday, August 17th in the morning, after the weekly cleaning of the monastery church. At the back of the photo is a view of the guest entrance and seating area.  Also visible are the icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Baptist to the left, who is the principal patron Saint of our Monastery, and on the right, Saint Benedict, to whose Order we belong. In front of the icons is the votive candle stand, where pilgrims, visitors and guests can light candles and pray before the sacred images.

After some heavy rains in the recent past, we are again having dry conditions and enjoying pleasant weather for walking. The Chama Canyon Wilderness, our “home sweet home,” is a “sight to behold,” especially at this time of year. The next News posting will feature a current view of our surroundings.

We assure you of our daily prayers and are grateful for yours. A blessed week ahead to all!
