Today the Church recounts in the liturgy the day the Lord was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.

At Jesus’ Baptism, the voice of the Father was heard, the Holy Spirit was present in the form of a dove and Jesus’ divinity was recognized. The Baptism of Jesus thus became a perfect manifestation, or “Epiphany” of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The public ministry of Jesus was inaugurated at his Baptism, which led to the supreme self-giving of the Lord, who came to set us free from bondage to sin and death.

O Savior of the world, save us.
