ALERT!! Winter road conditions.
See the News section on our Home page for updates regarding the driving conditions of our road during the winter.
The monastery is about 135 miles from the closest major airport in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 75 miles north of Santa Fe, and about 53 miles south of Chama, via U.S. Route 84. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the monastery. There is a bus service from the airport in Albuquerque to Santa Fe. Cars can be rented at the Albuquerque airport and in Santa Fe.
About 1 mile south of the entrance sign for Echo Amphitheater or 1 mile north of the Ghost Ranch Visitor's Center of the Carson National Forest (not to be confused with Ghost Ranch itself), the road for the monastery leaves Route 84 toward the west. This means that if one is coming from Santa Fe to the north, one turns to the left. Traffic on our 13 mile long "driveway" is light; hitchhikers will probably find that they must hike the entire 13 miles.
Forest Service Road 151 (the name of the road to the monastery) is winding, steep and narrow at some points. It has a dirt and clay surface and turns quite slippery when wet. Drivers of 2-wheel drive vehicles should allow time for the road to dry after a rain. In the winter the road can be negotiated most safely when frozen, i.e., during the night and in early morning hours before sunrise.
